Black Cats and Halloween

Salutations and welcome to another session of WWBS or What Would Bangs Say?

We have a special treat for you all today just in time for Halloween. We're talking about black cats and some interesting facts about them regarding this spooky holiday. Hope you enjoy! So everybody knows that they say black cats are bad luck, right? Well, did you know they are considered good luck in places like Japan, France, and Scotland just to name a few? In Japan, some people may even say "Konichiwa" to a black cat passing by to increase their fortunes. It's also believed that women looking for the perfect partner should have a black cat around.

While we're at it, let's bust a few more of these myths that give our poor mini-panther friends a bad rep, shall we? One myth states that a black cat lying on a bed with an ill person will bring death. Not true! In fact, my late cousin, Midnight helped my human feel better countless times while she was sick in bed.

Here's a silly one - "Never turn your back on a black cat or you will be cursed". The only thing that might happen if you turn your back on a black cat or any cat, is that they may hop on your shoulders for a ride. Not all cats are that adventurous though. Let's move on to what's really important. Despite these myths being untrue, black cats are often mistreated or even abused on Halloween. If one does cross your path, please be kind to him and maybe even take him in! (You could be saving his life).

Black cats are also the least likely to be adopted in shelters and rescues. Nobody really knows why, but I suspect it's these myths. One theory is that it could be because black cats don't photograph well, but my human and I strongly disagree with this. My late cousin Midnight took great pictures! Please know that if you adopt a black cat, you will have a loyal, loving, forever friend that is thankful you gave him or her a chance. In fact, if it weren't for Midnight my human may never have adopted me! I am forever grateful to him. RIP, Mr. Midnight.

I think that's enough for now. We hope you learned something from today's session, starlights! Have a Happy Halloween and don't forget to be extra kind to black cats if you see one. Shine bright, starlights! Have a request for a future post? Let us know through comments or email to find out What Would Bangs Say? We were lucky enough to hear from a fellow beginner author who writes about cats. Her first book is a children's book about black cats on Halloween. The author's name is Michelle Molnar. We'll leave a link to their book in case you'd like to check it out. Thank you, Michelle, for helping black cats get homes with your book!
